Introduction

da0 (pronounced “dow-zero”) is the Web3 arm of g0v (gov-zero), co-initiated by FAB DAO co-founder Mashbean and others after attending the 2022 Funding the Commons conference in New York City. Since 2012, g0v has grown into one of Asia’s most active civic tech communities, with thousands of contributors and over a hundred open-source projects. da0 was born from the realization that Web3’s public goods mechanisms could powerfully amplify g0v’s existing culture of open-source collaboration — bridging grassroots civic energy with decentralized infrastructure.

Lego and Fried Chicken for g0v

da0 has been described as “Lego and fried chicken for g0v” — Lego representing the modular, composable technical architecture of Web3 tools, and fried chicken symbolizing the communal meals that fuel g0v’s legendary hackathons. The metaphor captures da0’s dual mission: on one hand, introducing cutting-edge international mechanisms like Gitcoin Passport (decentralized identity verification), Hypercerts (impact certificates), and Retroactive Public Goods Funding for local experimentation in Taiwan; on the other, preserving g0v’s open, joyful, “nobody” community spirit.

Internally, da0 operates through multiple working groups — a DID (decentralized identity) group, a governance group studying quadratic voting and funding, and a communications group — each functioning as a g0v-style proposal that anyone can join and contribute to. Taipei Ark: International Connections and Local Experimentation

From October 21 to 23, 2022, da0 hosted a three-day event at Taipei Ark that brought together key figures from the international Web3 public goods ecosystem. Protocol Labs researcher Evan Miyazono shared his vision of decentralized knowledge networks; Gitcoin’s Leon Erichsen brought hands-on experience with quadratic funding; RadicalxChange founder Glen Weyl discussed theoretical frameworks for plural governance; and Taiwan’s Digital Development Minister Audrey Tang responded to these international perspectives with Taiwan’s own digital democracy practices.

The event was more than a conference — it was a declaration that Taiwan’s civic tech community was ready to take the international stage in Web3 public goods, bringing a decade of open-source governance experience into the blockchain world.
