Overview
In November 2021, FAB DAO helped Penghu Sea King — a local seafood brand from the Penghu Islands — list Dried Octopus NFTs on the Tezos blockchain, selling them at 2.5 XTZ (approximately NT$440) each. This was an early experiment in merging NFTs with physical e-commerce: burning the NFT entitled the holder to receive a real package of dried octopus shipped from Penghu.
All 10 NFTs sold out in a single evening, with some collectors reselling at double the price on the secondary market. In a delightful twist, no NFTs have ever been burned for redemption — every holder chose to keep their digital collectible rather than exchange it for the real thing. The digital octopus, it seems, proved more appealing than the dried one.
This burn-to-redeem model was one of the earliest physical-goods redemption experiments in Taiwan’s NFT space, pioneering a marketing approach that would later be adopted by other projects.
Special Mechanism
- Burning the NFT entitles the holder to a real package of dried octopus (Taiwan addresses only, free shipping)
- A portion of proceeds supports the Seafood Royal Scholarship Program, a social capital philanthropy pilot; dried octopus provided by Seafood Royal
