Introduction
This is where we always begin telling the story of FAB DAO.
On July 31, 2021, television was broadcasting the Tokyo Olympics men’s doubles badminton gold medal match. Based on viewership ratings and ELTA data, nearly one million people across Taiwan were watching the game together. The Taiwanese duo Lee Yang and Wang Chi-Lin won by an overwhelming margin. The final winning shot landed on the line; the Chinese players challenged and failed. The last image of the match was the Hawk-Eye system’s ruling — the time was 8:55 PM.
The gold medal match happened to fall on the very evening that Dou-Ni (volume DAO’s founder) left his hospital job. Having watched the match alongside all of Taiwan, inspiration struck: “This is it!” He rushed to his computer, opened graphic design software, and before the flag-raising ceremony could begin, created the New Era Flag and uploaded it to Facebook. The time was 9:09 PM.
Before long, the flag spread explosively across the internet — tens of thousands of shares and all manner of creative derivatives, from flag-raising simulations to the color code #198964, extending to masks, pins, cakes, themed hotel rooms, and more. Social media platforms were flooded with the green of the badminton court.
Taiwanese people held a virtual celebration across social media. Perhaps it had been a very long time since Taiwan had a shared symbol free of historical baggage.
Who Owns the Copyright to This Flag?
This phenomenon-level event also sparked widespread debate: who owns the copyright to this design? Lee Yang and Wang Chi-Lin? The Olympic Committee? Some even said it belonged to the Hawk-Eye robot.
Although Dou-Ni was the first to create the line-call flag graphic and frame it as a “national flag” concept in his post, he had no desire to join the copyright melee. Digital problems require digital solutions. Holding this meme dividend, Dou-Ni decided to use NFTs as a digital prescription, developing several experiments to anchor the destiny of this era-defining image.
The original New Era Flag was minted as an NFT by the Tezos address MemeforTaiwan, limited to a single edition that would never be reprinted.
Discovering the Link Between NFTs and Charitable Action Through Experimentation
The creator royalty on NFT trading platforms can generate royalties across unlimited transactions, converted into cryptocurrency. This feature sparked a bold idea: “If every royalty payment is donated, wouldn’t that be a kind of perpetual donation machine?”
The first action was a small experiment. After listing the New Era Flag on the NFT trading platform AkaSwap, Dou-Ni gathered five friends who supported the work to trade the NFT among themselves. After six transactions, the price of the New Era Flag reached 200 XTZ (approximately NT$22,000), generating NT$7,556 in royalties — all of which was donated to the Digital Humanitarian Association, a nonprofit that uses telemedicine to promote health in rural and underserved communities. Afterward, Dou-Ni bought the New Era Flag back himself.
Collecting a Token of Warmth and Gratitude
The second action began on September 3 with an official auction of the New Era Flag. This time, it was not just the 10% perpetual charity royalty — 100% of the auction proceeds were donated to the Digital Humanitarian Association. The final auction price was 300 XTZ, and a total of NT$50,895 was donated.
Throughout this campaign, riding the high visibility of the New Era Flag — whether through traditional media coverage, social media praise for the innovative action, or even bewildered mockery at selling virtual symbols for donations — we gained a visceral sense of the astonishing potential of NFTs to capture abstract “value.” When visiting organizations afterward, the charitable auction story of the New Era Flag NFT also helped us convince charities, arts organizations, and cultural institutions that “Web3 is not just bubbles and scams.”
FAB DAO had not yet been born at this point, but these early operational experiences and Web3 community feedback became the foundational nourishment for public-good NFT projects. The expanding imagination of Web3 nonprofit action was set in motion.
