Introduction
“Borderless Taipei” is the world’s first officially recognized on-chain artist residency program, co-curated by the Taipei Artist Village (TAV) and FAB DAO, with Han Ching-Ling as co-curator. The program invited 10 artists active in the Tezos ecosystem for a six-week virtual residency, during which they created and published works on AkaSwap, Taiwan’s NFT platform. FAB DAO collected these works using DAO treasury funds and donated them to TAV’s permanent collection — marking the first time a public art institution formally incorporated NFTs into its official holdings.
Pioneering the Official On-Chain Residency Model
Traditional artist residencies require visas, airfare, and studio space, often excluding creators with limited resources. “Borderless Taipei” inverted this model: artists did not need to physically relocate, creating, exhibiting, and trading from anywhere in the world through blockchain, breaking both the geographic and economic constraints of conventional residencies.
FAB DAO played a critical bridging role — on one side, leveraging the DAO community’s collective purchasing power to provide economic support for artists; on the other, using the flexibility of a decentralized organization to help a traditional art institution understand and embrace the logic of on-chain art. This “DAO collects, institution archives” model set a precedent for collaboration between public art institutions and Web3 communities.
A Dance Between Museums and DAOs
During the program, an online seminar titled “DAO & Art: Can We Dance Together?” directly addressed the tensions and collaborative possibilities between decentralized organizations and traditional art institutions. How does a DAO’s flat governance structure dialogue with a museum’s curatorial authority? How can community consensus and professional judgment find balance?
The project was also featured at Ars Electronica 2022 in Linz, bringing Taiwan’s DAO x Art experiment to the international stage and showcasing Asian Web3 art community innovations to the European art world.
Workshops and Education
NFT workshops were held during the Treasure Hill Light Festival as part of the residency, featuring a carefully designed three-hour curriculum: the first hour covered blockchain and NFT fundamentals, the second hour featured resident artists sharing their creative processes and on-chain publishing experiences, and the third hour guided participants through hands-on wallet setup, minting, and trading. This “theory — case study — practice” structure enabled participants with no prior cryptocurrency experience to complete their first on-chain transaction within three hours.
