Overview

The Vanishing Family is a charitable NFT project by FAB DAO in collaboration with Chen Wu-Chen, an artist and survivor of the White Terror political persecution. Centered on the 228 Incident, the project uses its NFT distribution mechanism to let collectors experience the process of “vanishing” and “revelation” firsthand.

A distribution mechanism designed to evoke visceral understanding

The most distinctive aspect of The Vanishing Family release was our adaptation of the “blind box” model common in NFT culture. Artist Chen Wu-Chen’s works were originally created in pairs, making them a natural fit for the concepts of “blind box” and “reveal.” Each day, when you purchased a Vanishing Family — Blind Box NFT, you would receive a forced airdrop of Vanishing Family — Revealed 24 hours later.

An online issue-driven exhibition made possible by NFTs

Each reveal used the NFT’s “description” field to include a real story, told without explicit identification. The five NFT sets each featured excerpts from farewell letters or fragments of stories from political prisoners, evoking the tragedies that occurred in March 1947, after the 228 Incident. The words read deceptively lightly, but the stories behind them are profoundly heavy, amplifying the power of Chen Wu-Chen’s paintings. To bring the transitional justice conversation to an international audience, professional translators rendered the texts in English, further strengthening the completeness of the NFT project. The “description” is minted on-chain alongside the NFT, permanently stored and faithfully displayed across all platforms.

Even with such a weighty subject, supporters collected with fervor

We initially worried the editions might not sell out and set a rule to burn any remaining tokens after 24 hours. But reality exceeded our expectations. With roughly 100 editions per day, the first day sold out in about 35 minutes, the second day in 15 minutes, and by the final day everything was gone within 2 minutes. A secondary market quickly emerged, with each piece trading more than 10 times and floor prices exceeding double the original. Before the project launched, it was hard to imagine that White Terror-themed artworks could generate such a direct and powerful response in a nascent NFT community.

1947March.tez” is the wallet address FAB DAO created specifically for Chen Wu-Chen’s works. All sales and royalties are designated as the “Metaverse Transitional Justice Fund,” with the primary mission of helping Chen Wu-Chen’s works continue to reach and inspire more people.

About Artist Chen Wu-Chen

Chen Wu-Chen was imprisoned for two years during his military service for writing words critical of the KMT: “Against the Central Government, Against the Kuomintang.” Since his release, he has created over 1,000 human-rights-themed works across diverse media, including oil paintings, wood carvings, and mixed-media pieces. His series include The Vanishing Family, Virtual Great Evil, and Names in the Wind. In 2022, Chen Wu-Chen was invited to exhibit at the Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall — a landmark moment in Taiwan’s history.

Chen has said that these paintings were never meant to be sold in his lifetime. This is a lifelong act of redemption — the artist has dedicated his entire life to creating on behalf of the victims of the White Terror era.
